Le hashtag asexualité
Le hashtag “asexualité” est vraiment vraiment vide ! On n’a aucun Français sur Tumblr ?

I slept very badly because of the french election today, and yesterday I watched a disgusting videoclip, so I was in a quite asexual mood and I did that.
Now I just want to vote and wake up at 8 tonight with good news…
Good god, a french person ! And something on the “asexualité” hashtag ! C’est vraiment pas un jour comme les autres !
Could you post a link to the antiasexual study you just described, please? :)
The study is not access free. If you or some friend are currently in college, it may be that your institution give you access to some on-line journals…

Small digest of the new study:
Intergroup bias toward “Group X”: Evidence of prejudice, dehumanization, avoidance, and discrimination against asexuals”
Cara C. MacInnis and Gordon Hodson
Presentation of the studies :
Those two social scientists conducted 2 studies in which they asked participants to fill questionnaire concerning sexualities. They were asked to answer questions about heterosexuality, homosexuality, bisexuality and asexuality, in order to evaluate :
1- their attitude toward
2- their tendency to dehumanized (give or deny human traits and emotions)
3- their intention to avoid contact with
4- their intention to discriminate (employment and housing) against
The focus of the study was on asexuality and a definition of asexuality was given in the beginning of each survey.
…
….
Results of the studies (which are quite shocking if you ask me) :
-There is an antiasexual bias.
-This asexual bias is a form of sexual minority prejudice. (meaning that for most haters, they hate all sexual minorities, and conversely).
-Asexual are target of negative attitude
-Asexuals are target of : dehumanization, intention of avoidance, discrimination intentions.
-Strikingly : bias against asexuals is either equivalent or even more extreme than bias toward homosexuals and bisexuals (i.e attitude, dehumanization, intentions of…). Meaning that we scored lower on each survey, we were declared less human, less desirable to be in contact with than straight people (of course) but even than LGB people…
Small comments :
The most important thing to note may be that : asexuals are clear targets of bias by heterosexuals.
Prejudices against asexuals are linked to prejudice against LGB people.
One study is not enough. In particular, there’s something in the violence that LGB people suffer that is not captured in this present study. In particular, I personally won’t go by the world claiming that, as an asexual, I experience more violence, systematic oppression, etc. than LGB people. The study is about prejudice (not violence, nor oppression) and its scope is limited.
Nevertheless, this is very sad and very serious stuff, if you ask me…

Quote :
There are several manifestations of sexual stigma these have been identified as enacted sexual stigma, felt sexual stigma and internalized sexual stigma.[4]
1- Enacted sexual stigma involves an act of discrimination or violence towards members of a sexual minority group. This type of sexual stigma is not reserved for only members of the group but can be directed to the heterosexual family and friends of the individual or even towards those who allied themselves with the minority group. This is referred to as a courtesy stigma.
2- Felt sexual stigma consists of the apprehensiveness that one might have of being labeled with a sexual stigma based on the views and stereotypes that society has placed on sexual minority members. This type of stigma is most likely to affect behavior because of the wide range of individuals that may be influenced by it. An individual may begin to avoid situations where a stigma could be enacted or by avoiding the majority group overall. Felt stigma can be a motivation to confirm a non-stigmatized status instead of possibly having their sexuality questioned.[5]
3- Internalized sexual stigma becomes a part of a person’s self-identity as they begin to accept a sexual stigma they feel represents their belief system. Their self-concept supports the idea of a particular stigma that society has created through negative or offensive remarks or actions, which consequently creates negative attitudes toward their own personality and sexuality. In other words, the stigmatized individual begins to believe the negative views held against them, and begin to conform to common stereotypes.
Without trying too hard to win the Olympics, I do think we’re clearly subjected to 2 and 3…
An asexual man, particularly a celibate and/or sex-averse asexual man, is a bit like a symbol of religion in a fiercely atheistic society: some will dismiss him as a fantastical impossibility, while others will react with varying levels of animosity, out of the sense that he is an intrusion…
One of the best text I’ve ever read inside the asexual community. You definitely should put it up for the Ace Carnival. (Don’t know who’s hosting this month, but you should definitely contact “Writing from factor X”).
On the down side, I’dd add, that whereas I share this view of asexual masculinity as a possible disruption of trad. masculinity, I do not share your views of sex as something inherently linked to “power, aggression [and] dominance”. This anti-sex perspective is confusing and kinkophobic, at the very least.
Then wouldn’t that mean that people who are considered to have “too much” sex by medical professionals also oppressed too? That because their sexualities are invalidated because it’s considered not “normal,” to be having a hella ton of sex, they should be considered oppressed by the masses of…
OMG… Still there. I can’t believe. I leave Tumblr for two month and this is still the same story.
So, because I do think you write in good faith, I’m going to state this nicely :
TO KNOW IF SOMEONE FEEL STIGMATIZED IN SOCIETY, YOU HAVE TO ASK THEM
which also mean that you can’t decide whether or not they are, just by pulling the answer out of your head…
This is simple logic
Sex analogy :
“Imagine how you would feel if playing gin rummy, and playing it well, were considered a major component of happiness and a major sign of maturity […] and everything you ever read implied that normal and healthy people just somehow ‘know’ how to play and really enjoy playing…”

Ahahaha ! Just great !
It would have been so perfect if it weren’t a boy and a girl… I know it was not intended, but I’ve got an heteronormative feeling about it. -> no : 2 boys, no : 2 boys, yes : a boy and a girl…
